Wedding Dress Shopping FAQs

Planning your bridal appointment often comes with a few questions. Here are some of the things brides most commonly ask us about wedding dress shopping, fittings and alterations at Evelie.

Ideally, start 10–12 months before your wedding. If you’re ordering a designer gown made-to-measure, production plus alterations typically takes 6–8 months (timelines vary by designer). Need it sooner? Some made-to-order rush options can be ready in as little as 12 weeks, usually with an additional 15% rush fee.

Yes. With a shorter timeline, a sample sale dress is often the best option. If you need alterations, our rush service can be completed in around 3–4 weeks.

  • Sizing: Review the listed size carefully before purchasing.

  • Condition: Sample gowns are sold as-is, based on their in-store condition (complimentary dry cleaning isn’t included).

  • Alterations: We generally don’t recommend altering a dress down by more than two sizes, as it can affect structure and fit.

  • Key Worker Discount: The Key worker discount is not applicable on sample sale dresses.

Yes—there’s a booking fee to secure your appointment online. You can reschedule free of charge if it’s done 72+ hours in advance. Cancellations 72+ hours before receive a full refund. No refunds apply for no-shows, late cancellations, or changes within 72 hours.

Your appointment is relaxed and guided by your stylist:

  • Consultation: We chat through your preferences, budget, and wedding details (including anything you’ve shared on WhatsApp).

  • Trying on: You’ll try on a curated selection, refining styles as you go.

  • Measurements: We’ll measure you at the end to recommend the best size.

  • Next steps: You’ll leave with clarity on what you love and what suits you best.

A few simple things help the fitting feel easier:

  • A hair tie (great for changing necklines and silhouettes)

  • Nude seamless underwear (avoid black or tight options)

  • Shoes aren’t required—we have options available

  • We also provide disposable socks for hygienic shoe trials

Appointments are one hour. You’ll usually try at least five dresses, and sometimes 7–8 depending on pacing. Please arrive on time—there’s no waiting area.

You can bring up to four guests at Evelie South Kensington and in the first-floor studio at Maida Vale. In the Maida Vale ground-floor studio, you can bring up to two guests. For comfort and safety, we ask that toddlers and pets stay at home.

Yes, you’re very welcome to include friends or family by video call during your appointment. We can accommodate WhatsApp, Zoom, FaceTime, or another platform of your choice using our in-boutique internet connection. Just let us know in advance if you would like to do this.

Absolutely. Shopping solo can be a lovely way to focus on what you feel best in. Your stylist will guide you through silhouettes, fit, and styling—every step of the way.

Our main collection includes samples in sizes 12–14, suitable for a range of brides (roughly UK 6–14 depending on fit and designer). Our Curve collection includes options for UK 16–22.

Our new wedding dresses typically range from £1,000–£3,000, depending on design and detailing. Sample sale gowns start from £400.

Sizing varies by designer, so a size in one brand may fit differently in another. We always recommend prioritizing fit over the label, and your stylist will help you find the best size for your measurements. Click here for our wedding dress sizing guide and charts.

Yes, a fee applies for each appointment you book. If you go on to purchase a gown, we refund the booking fee from your final bridal appointment.

Yes—our in-house team offers alterations with a standard turnaround of 8–10 weeks. A 4-week rush option is available. Click here to learn more about our wedding dress alteration services.

In most cases, yes—many gowns can be taken in by 1–2 sizes. Larger changes may affect the design and structure, so our seamstresses will advise based on your dress and fittings.

Sometimes, but it depends on the dress and the amount of seam allowance available. Some wedding dresses can be let out slightly, while others offer very little extra room. Our seamstresses can advise on what is possible once they assess the construction of the gown.

If your dress has a train, a bustle is strongly recommended for your reception and evening—so you can move comfortably. We’ll tailor the bustle style to suit your gown and how you want it to look.

Yes. We recommend a cabin-approved travel box so you can take your dress as hand luggage. Fold it carefully and avoid checking it in to reduce risk during travel.
